Family History

Alfred Thomas Underhill was born in 1893 at Burton on Trent and was the son of Arthur Thomas a master decorator and Elizabeth Underhill née Carnell of 31 Victoria Road, Netherfield, Nottingham. His father Arthur Thomas was born in 1868 in Newington, London and his mother Elizabeth Carnell was born in 1867 in Carlton, Nottingham, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 6 children, Edwin b1890 Carlton, Lily b1891 Carlton, Alfred Thomas b1893 Burton on Trent, Bertrum b1894 Burton on Trent, Ernest b1902 Netherfield and Francis b1905 Netherfield . In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Victoria Road Netherfield Nottingham and are shown as Arthur Thomas 43yrs a master decorator he is living with his wife Elizabeth 44 yrs and their children , Lily 20 yrs a lace miner, Alfred Thomas 18 yrs a printer, Bertrum 17 yrs a warehouseman, Ernest 9 yrs a scholar and Francis 6 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Pte. Alfred Thomas Underhill, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Netherfield and served with the 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He landed in France on 21st April 1915 and was killed in action on 18th May 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial.
