Family History

Clifford Lees was born in 1897 he was the son of Thomas Godfrey a colliery manager and Elizabeth Lees née Chapman of Newstead House, Newstead. Thomas Godfrey was born in 1862 and Elizabet Chapman was born in 1861 both were born in Nottingham, they were married in 1884 and had 5 children. In 1911 the family are living at Newstead House, Newstead Village Thomas Godfrey 49 yrs a colliery manager is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, Gerald Thomas 25 yrs a colliery surveyor, Roland Victor 24 yrs a bank clerk, Norman Samuel 15 yrs a scholar Clifford 14 yrs a scholar and Reginald 8 yrs of age. Clifford left his father £217 7s. 5d. in his will.

Military History

Lieutenant Clifford Lees served with the 3rd battalion West Riding Regiment, he was attached to the 5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. Landing in France on 18th September 1918 and died of wounds on 5th November 1918 he is buried Premont British Cemetery (grave ref II.E.17)
