George Lee was born in 1892 at Langwith and was the son of Joseph a colliery labourer and Elizabeth Emma Lee née Renshaw of 106 Bathurst Terrace Langwith Mansfield Nottinghamshire. His father Joseph was born in 1865 at Wellow, (he died on 25th June 1914 whilst fighting an underground fire at Langwith Colliery ) his mother Elizabeth Emma was born in 1868 also at Wellow, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have the following children, Joseph b1888, George b1892, Blanche b1897, Charles b1899, Frank b1901, Emily b1903, John b1905, Maggie b1907 and Harry b1909 all were born at Langwith. In the 1911 census the family are living at 106 Bathurst Terrace, Langwith and are shown as Joseph 46 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Emma 43 yrs and their children, George 19 yrs a colliery labourer, Blanche Nellie 14 yrs assisting at home, Charles 12 yrs a scholar, Frank 10 yrs a scholar, Emily 8 urs, John 6 yrs, Maggie 4 yrs and Harry 2 yrs old.
Sergeant George Lee enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Langwith, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 23rd May 1917 at the 9th Red Cross Hospital, Calais, he is buried at Calais Southern Cemetery Grave Reference: G 3 13
