Family History

He was the son of Charles Hunt and Betsy Elizabeth Briggs and the brother of George, John, Lily and Jane Briggs. In 1911 they lived on Kirkby Road Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. He married Ida Bentley (born 26th July 1894) on 2nd October 1915 at Skegby they lived at Morley Street Stanton Hill Mansfield Nottinghamshire and went on to have a son Charles William Bentley born 1st March 1916. Commencing 10th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings a week.

Military History

Corporal William Briggs enlisted on 28th July 1915 at Mansfield, giving his age as 23 yrs 276 days, his occupation was a coal miner. He was posted as a Gunner to the Royal Garrison Artillery and attend their barracks at Dover on 3rd August 1915. He embarked from Southampton on 7th July 1916 and disembarked the following day at Le Harve. He was serving with the 108th Siege Battery when he died of wounds on 2nd June 1917, and is buried at Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery
