John Charles Judson was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a maltster and Emma Judson née Green of 26 Tenter Buildings Appleton Gate, Newark. His father Joseph was born in 1868 at Newark and his mother Emma Frances Green was born in 1872 at Derby, they were married in 1895 their mnarriage was recorded in the Hartlepool registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Ellen b1896, John Charles b1897, Joseph b1899, Ernest b1901, Alice Mary b1905, Arthur b1908 and Emma Frances b1910, all were born in Newark In the 191 census the family are living at 26 Tenter Buildings, Appleton Gate, Newark and are shown as John 43 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Emma Frances 39 yrs and their children, John Charles 14 yrs a scholar, Joseph 12 yrs a scholar, Ernest 10 yrs a scholar, Alice Mary 6 yrs a scholar, Arthur 3 yrs and Emma Frances 7 months old.
Private John Charles Judson enlisted on 18th August 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 162 days, his address 26 Tenter Buildings, Appleton Gate Newark, his next of kin was his father Joseph of the same address, he was a labourer. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters and on 17th August 1915 landed in France. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France. 1.B.41
Article published on 22nd November 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of Mr & Mrs Judson, 26 Tenter Buildings, Newark. As a schoolboy he played for Mr W.T. Pratt’s XI and was a pupil of Lovers’ Lane School. After which he was employed at Messrs. Quibell Bros. Ltd. He enlisted on Aug. 8th, 1914 and went to France 12 months later. Home on furlough in Feb. 1916, he was reported missing on Sept. 3rd and declared dead in July 1917. His brother, Pte. Joseph Judson has been in France 15 months and is now in the M.G.C
