Jonathan Henry Bartle was born in 1893 at Egmanton and was the son of Bryan a farmer and Jemima Bartle née Wetherall of Egmanton His father Bryan was born in 1867 at Ossington, his mother Jemima Wetherall was born in 1872 at Darlton, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Kate b1894 Fleborough Jonathan b1893, Bryan b1895, Rose b1896, Lisa b1898 and Sarah b1907 all were born in Egmanton. In the 1911 census the family were living at Egmanton and were shown as Bryan Bartle 44 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Jemima 39 yrs and their children, Kate 19 yrs a dairy girl, Jonathan 17 yrs a farm worker, Bryan 16 yrs a worker on a farm, Rose 14 yrs a domestic worker, Lisa 12 yrs a scholar and Sarah 4 yrs of age.

Military History

Jonathan Henry Bartle enlisted on 12 December 1915 at Retford, aged 22 years 8 months. He was mobilised on 20 December 1916 and after training posted to 9th Battalion. On 4 October 1917 as part of the Battle of Broodseinde, the 9th Battalion attacked and took the village of Poelcappelle. It was though a costly affair for the battalion with over 100 men killed and Jonathan was one of these men.
