Herbert was born in Colsterworth, Lincolnshire in 1893 and was the son of Thomas a groom and gardener and Rebecca Ann Spicer (née) Beeson of 9 Spittal Row, Newark. Thomas and Ann had a large family of 9 children, however sadly one died in infancy . His siblings were Arthur, Walter, Aubrey, Florence and Alfred . In the 1911 census the family are living at Church Street, Long Bennington, most of the children have now left home and only Thomas,Florence and Alfred remain at home with their parents. He married his wife Eliza Ives in 1915 at Newark and they lived at , of 9, Spittal Row, Northgate, Notts.
Herbert enlisted at Newark and served with the 2nd battalion, Worcester Regiment and went to the Western Front. On 13th May 1918 his wife Eliza heard from a Sergeant in his battalion that Herbert was missing. She later heard that he had been taken as a prisoner of war. On 9th September he died whilst still a prisoner of war at Munster, Germany. He is buried in Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany. grave reference VI .A.16
Article published 5th June 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Husband of Mrs E. Spicer, 9 Spittal Row, Northgate, Newark. Previous to going to the army he was employed as a baker by Mr Watkin, Kirkgate. He joined up at Newark on Feb. 5th, 1916 and was trained at Borden Camp, afterwards proceeding to France. He was wounded in the legs, hip and thigh, and taken prisoner about April 17th, 1918. Died in Munster Camp, Germany. He married a daughter of Mr William Ives, Spital Row, three months before joining up.
