Joseph Knight Spreckley

Joseph Knight was the son of Paul Vernon and Annie Emma Spreckley (née Knight). His father Paul Vernon was born in Nottingham in 1862 (O/N/D Nottingham), the son of William and Caroline Spreckley. In 1871 William, a commercial clerk, and Caroline were living on Union Road, Nottingham, with Paul and their three other sons. His mother Annie Emma was born in Bermondsey, London, on 5 March 1866, the daughter of Peter and Sarah Knight. Her father was born in Nottingham and the famiy was living in Nottingham in 1871. In 1881 they were living at 39 Canal Street; Peter Knight was a gunsmith and Annie (15) was working as a pattern lace maker. Her parents had had seven children of whom only two survived, Annie and her brother Walter. Paul and Annie were married at Nottingham St Peter on 13 January 1883 (J/F/M Nottingham); he was 20 years old and she 17. They had eight children, six born in Nottingham and the two youngest, Walter and Joseph, in West Bridgford: Annie Ethel b. 13 August 1883, William Knight b. 19 April 1885, Florence Knight b. 26 February 1887, Lilian Knight birth registered 1891 (J/F/M Nottingham), Dorothy Knight b. 9 December 1893, Walter Knight b. 20 March 1895 and Joseph Knight b. 1898 (J/A/S Basford). In 1891 Paul (28), a lace warehouse manager, and Annie (25) were living on Colville Terrace, Nottingham. Four of their five children were in the home on the night of the census: Annie (7), Florence (5), Paul (1) and Lillian (under 1 year). Also in the household was a general servant, Laura Kemp (16). Their son William (5) was registered on the census at 39 Canal Street, Nottingham, with his maternal grandparents, Peter and Sarah Knight and their son Walter (16). In 1901 Paul, now a fret worker in wood, and Annie were living at 28 Rutland Road, West Bridgford, with seven of their eight children: Annie a haberdasher's assistant, William a gunsmith's assistant, Paul, Lillian, Dorothy (7), Walter (6) and Joseph (2). However, by 1911 Annie was living with her parents at 39 Canal Street, Nottingham, along with five of her children: Florence a shop assistant, Lilian a blouse machinist, Dorothy a Post Office clerk, Walter, a telephone mechanic and Joseph who was still at school. Her eldest daughter, Annie, a shop assistant, was living with her uncle Walter Spreckley (36) an assistant gun dealer and his wife Elizabeth Lucy and daughter Elizabeth Irene (9), at 42 Wilford Grove, Meadows, Nottingham. Paul was working as a clothiers assistant and was a boarder in the household of Samuel Walker, a clothier and outfitter (retail) - who was probably his employer - and his wife and family, in Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. William had married in 1909 and was living with his wife and family off Glapton Road, Meadows. Annie's husband, Paul Vernon Spreckley, has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census, but there is a record of his death in 1930 (J/F/M Sheffield) aged about 67. Annie later moved to 110 Wilford Road; she was living at this address when her son Walter enlisted in 1915 and was recorded there on a 1925 street directory. However, by 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, Annie (described as 'incapacitated') was living with her married daughter Annie Stanley on Kirk Lane, Ruddington, where she died on 27 December 1949. Joseph Knight married Annie Eliza Miller at Meadows St Saviour on 5 May 1917 (A/M/J Nottingham). They were living at 26 Willersley Street, Meadows, Nottingham, at the time of his death in 1918. Annie Eliza married secondly Samuel Brogdale in 1922 (O/N/D Nottingham). Samuel had served in the war in the Northamptonshire Regiment and later the Middlesex Regiment; he had been seriously wounded in 1916 and as a result of his injuries was discharged from the Army in 1917. Samuel's brother, Thomas, served in the South Staffordshire Regiment and was killed in 1914 (see record on this Roll of Honour). Annie and Samuel had two children, Nancy Maisie and Donald Peter. She died in 1965 (J/A/S Nottingham); her husband predeceased her (1946). Of Joseph's siblings: Annie Ethel married Harry Stanley in 1919 (J/A/S Basford). In 1939 they were living at 28 Kirk Lane, Ruddington; Harry (b. 26 December 1885) was a commercial traveller (furniture). Also in the household was Annie's widowed mother. Annie died on 12 January 1976; the Probate record gave her address as 20 Collyer Road, Calverton, Nottinghamshire. William Knight married Florence Martin in 1909 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1911 they were living at 17 Eckington Terrace, Glapton Road, Meadows, with their son Eric (2m); William was employed as a telephone mechanic with the National Telephone Company. By 1939 they were living on 14 Ruddington Lane, Wilford; he was working as a motor engineer (agricultural). William died in 1973 (J/F/M Basford). Paul Knight served in the war in the RAMC (81271 Private). He married Ethel M Cave in 1916 (J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 he and Ethel (b. 19 May 1890) were living on Grayling Street, Derby; Paul was employed as an outfitters shop manager. Also in the home was their son Thomas J. (b. 4 August 1921) who was employed as a laundry clerk. The record of one other occupant in the household remains closed. Ethel died in 1940 (J/F/M Derby) and Paul married secondly Margaret Eleanor Alice Townson at Derby St Thomas in 1954. He died in 1956 (J/F/M Derby). Florence Knight was living at 66 Victoria Road, Netherfield, in 1939, sharing the home with Fanny Bond (b. 17 August 1877) a dressmaker. Florence died on 12 September 1974. Lillian Knight married Stanley Watthey in 1930 (J/A/S Nottingham) and probably died in 1949 (J/A/S Colchester). Dorothy Knight married Henry Bancroft (b. 5 October 1894) in 1919 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1939 Henry, a Post Office clerk, and Dorothy were living in West Bridgford with their sons Kenneth Henry (b. 1 May 1921) a trainee Post Office engineer, and John David (b. 5 August 1930). The records of two other occupants of the home remain closed. Dorothy died on 12 January 1983; she was then living in Edwalton. Walter Knight served in the war in the Machine Gun Corps (1492 Gunner) and later in the Royal Tank Regiment (200277 Sergeant); he attested on 20 May 1915 and was discharged to the Army Reserve on 25 February 1919 having served fro 3 years 282 days. He was discharged to 110 Wilford Grove, Meadows. He married Mary Fewkes in 1920 (J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 Walter, a gunsmith, and Mary (b. 15 December 1898) were living with their daughter Annie K. (b. 18 July 1920). The records of two other occupants of the home remain closed. Walter died in 1951 (J/F/M Nottingham).
