He was born about 1896, the son of Edmund and Maria Kirk who in 1911 had been married for 30 years and had had nine children born alive of whom eight were still living. In 1901 they lived at 53 Ortizen Street, Nottingham, and on the night of the census five children were at home; Harold E. (16), Edmund S (7), Arthur Sidney (5), Frank (3) and Clarice A (1). The eldest child, George, named in the 1911 census, was not in the house on the night of the census. By 1911 Edmund (52) and Maria (50) had moved to 21 Wimbourne Road, Nottingham; there were eight children in the household on the night of the census: George (29), Edmund, Arthur, Frank, Clarice, Annie (8), Freda (5) and Bertram (4). The family later moved to 6 Cope Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. the address on the CWGC record. At the time of his death, Arthur was engaged to be married to Lily.
'A' Coy, 2/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (N&D). He was reported missing on 21 March 1918 but his death was not confirmed until the end of the year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 1 January 1919: 'Kirk. Missing, March 21st, now known to be dead, 266511 Signaller AS Kirk, 7th Sherwood Foresters, age 23. Mother, brothers, sisters, fiancée Lily.' All Saints Church News, July 1919: The following have not previously been reported in the Church News. Arthur Sidney Kirk, 10 Cope Street, Signaller, 7th Sherwood Foresters, missing on or about March 21st 1918, presumed killed, age 23. Communicant, Guild member, Men’s Bible Class, from early years brought up at All Saints church; one of our keenest members.'
