Joseph Freedman was born in 1885 in Poland and was the son of Soloman a tailor and Annie Freedman of Lime Villa, Boundary Road, Newark His father Soloman Freedman was born in 1859 in Poland and his mother Annie was born in 1861 also in Poland they were both Russia Jews they were married in 1879 believed in Poland and had four children born in Poland, Sarah b1880, Simon b1881, Isaac b1883 and Joseph b1885. Soloman brought his wife family to England around 1891 and settled in Leeds and went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Leeds, Harry b1892, Betsy b1894, Rachel b1896, Maurice b1898 and Eli born 1901. On 20th March 1903 whilst living at 16 Elmwood Street, Leeds Soloman 41 yrs and a tailor applied for Naturalisation for his family and on 15th May 1903 made a declaration for naturalisation. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lytham Villas, New Balderton and are shown as Soloman 52 yrs a tailor, he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs and their children , Harry 19 yrs a sewing machinist tailor, Betsy 17 yrs a sewing machinist tailor, Rachel 15 yrs a button holer for a tailor, Morris 13 yrs a tailors baister Eli 10 yrs a scholar, also living with them is their married daughter Sarah Sherman 31 yrs a button holer for a tailor and her daughter Esther 7 yrs. Soloman stated he and his wife had been married 32 yrs and had had 9 children, one of which had died. Joseph married his wife Rose Dennison in 1909 at Leeds they had a son Lewis. In 1911 they lived at 25 Smith Street Newark.
Private Joseph Freedman enlisted at Leeds and served with the 9th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry , he was killed in action on 4th October 1917 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
His brother Private Maurice Freedman enlisted at Nottingham on 20th May 1916, he served with the 7th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 31st March 1918 and is buried at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France. He was born in Poland during 1885 so may have been 31 when killed.
