Walter Freeman was born in 1887 at Clay Cross and was baptised on 19th February 1887 at Clay Cross Parish Church, the son of the late Samuel Freeman a coal miner hewer and Eliza Barlow. Samuel was born in 1855 at Clay Cross he died in 1895 and Eliza Barlow was born in 1858 also at Claycross they were married on 30th June 1879 in Derbyshire and went on to have two further children, Elizabeth b1880 and John b1885, Walter married Edith Emma Parkes in 1909 at Mansfield, they has a son Walter born in 1909, in 1911 they were living at 155 Doe Lee, Chesterfield Walter was 24 yrs old and a coal miner hewer, His mother Eliza re married in 1896 at Mansfield to Redfern Scott CWGC - states Son of Mrs. E. Scott (formerly Freeman), of 52, Nesbitt St., Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. Personal Inscription on his headstone reads - GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS
Private Walter Freeman enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served witht he service number 57476 in the Lincolnshire Regiment, later transferred to 17th Company Labour Corps he died of wounds on 16th January 1918 and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery
