John Jessop and Elizabeth Powell married in Worksop in 1892. They had 5 children between 1894 and 1903, who were John, Ethel, Samuel, Margaret and Lillie, all born in Worksop at 45 Norfolk Street. Samuel, the third child, soon after his birth, went to live with his maternal grandparents, Samuel and Mary Powell. They lived at Main Road, Bothamsall, Retford Notts where Samuel the elder was a shepherd. In 1904, Samuel’s grandmother Mary, died at the age of 61, but continued living with his grandfather and when war was declared, enlisted at Retford. His parents were still resident at Norfolk Street at this time
Samuel enlisted in Retford in June 1915 and served with B Company 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. he was killed by an exploding shell on 20th September and is buried in the Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery, France Private Sam Jessop Worksop Guardian 4 October 1918 Writing to his grandfather, a comrade sends the news of the death of Private Sam Jessop, Lincolns, son of Mr and Mrs Jessop, 45 Norfolk Street, Worksop. Although a native of Worksop, Pte Jessop was only known by a few friends here, he having spent most of his life with his grandfather at Bothamsall where he was very well known and much esteemed for his splendid character. He appears to be the victim of a shell explosion on Sept. 20th, causing fatal injuries from which he died two hours later. Further news has not yet been received. Deceased joined up in June 1915 at the age of 19 years. In civilian life he was employed by Mr Peck, Forest Farm, Bothamsall. A brother, Pte John Jessop, West Yorks, is in Ireland. A Bothamsall hero As announced last week Pte Samuel Jessop, who was brought up by Mr Samuel Powell of Bothamsall, died from wounds received near Cambrai. previous to joining the Lincolns Signal Corps in June last year this young soldier worked on Mr peck's farm. Much sympathy is felt with Mr Powell in his bereavement. A memorial service was held at St Peters Church, Bothamsall, last Sunday week, when the Vicar alluded to the steady upright life of the deceased, and the 'Dead March' was played
