John was born in Woodhouse Yorkshire in 1899 the son of George a railway signalman and his wife Nellie Allison, they had 3 other children Charles born 1901 in Retford George Edward born 1910 also in Retford and a sister Rosamond born 1904 also in Retford. In the 1911 census we find the family living at 18 Trent Street, Retford , John is 12 years of age and a scholar.

Military History

His service record shows that he joined on 24th November 1916 and went into The Army reserve on 25th November 1916 . He was later mobilised and attested at Pontefract on 4th June 1917 , he gave his age as 17 years and 11 months and that he lived at 65 Cooper Place, Doncaster . He gave his next of kin as George & Nellie Allison 18 Trent Street, Retford - name on medical history form, is John William Allison. He gave his occupation as that telegraph lad, with the Great Northern Railway He was killed on 26/03/1918 and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France
