Family History

Arthur Adlard was born on 22nd September 1885 at Woodborough and was the son of John a platelayer and Emma Adlard née Baker of Bottom Common, Hucknall. His father John was born in 1851 at Timberland, Lincolnshire, his mther Emma Baker was born in 1857 at Sleaford, they were married on 13th April 1875 at Timberland, they went on to have 12 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , Betsy b1878 Underwood, John 1879 Epperstone, Gertrude 1883 Epperstone, Arthur 1885 Woodborough, Harry b1888 Langley Mill, Frank b1890 Langley Mill, Frederick b1892 Langley Mill, Charles Thomas b1895 Langley Mill, and Edward Arthur b1899 Hucknall. Arthur Adlard married his wife Sarah Voce in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at Gelsthorpe Yard Annesley Woodhouse Nottinghamshire they had two children, William Arthur born 5th November 1910 and Mary Emma born 3rd January 1913. In the 1911 census the family are living at Gelthorpe Yard, Annesley Woodhouse and are shown as Arthur 25 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Sarah 28 yrs and their son William Arthur 4 months old. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Bottom Common, Hucknall and were shown as John 59 yrs a retired platelayer he is living with his wife Emma 55 yrs and their children, Frank 20 yrs a coal miner, Frederick 18 yrs a coal miner, Thomas 15 yrs a pony driver, and Edwin 11 yrs. Following his death his widow Sarah was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence commencing 21st June 1915. His widow re married on 23rd April 1916 to Richard Henry Ball a miner.

Military History

Pte Arthur Adlard enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 13th August 1914. He was killed in action on 12th November 1914 having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium
