Herbert was born in Retford in 1886 and was the son of Robert and Sarah Ann Cooling, (nee Keywood) of Bollyam Lane, Retford, Robert and Sarah had a large family of 11 children however only eight of them had survived by the 1911 census. In the 1911 census the family are living at Bolliam Lane, Retford by this time his mother Sarah Ann is a widow and has four children living with her at this address , William , Herbert who is 26 years of age , single and a railway labourer and daughters Alice and Elizabeth.

Military History

Herbert enlisted in Retford and his medal card indicates he first went to France on 12th November 1914 , he was killed in action on 24th January 1916 and he is buried in Rue-Du-Bacqueret 913th London) Graveyard, Laventie, Pas-De-Calais
