John William Tye was born in 1894 at Newark and was the adopted son of Sarah Stevens (née Tye) of Saville Street, Sheffield. In the 1911 census he is living at Saville Street, Sheffield he is shown as being 17 yrs single and an assistant weightman on the railway. He is living with his adopted mother Sarah Stevens 52 yrs (b 1859 Newark) she is a widow.
Private John William Tye enlisted at Sheffield, he served with the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He landed in France on 20th January 1915 and was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His cousin Private Harold Tye enlisted at Sheffield whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment . He landed in France on 9th November 1914 and was killed in action on 4th June 1916, he is buried at Norfolk Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France. A further cousin Private Frank Tye enlisted on 29th August 1914 at Newark, he was 17 yrs and 223 days old, he was a labourer he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with the service number 5126. He landed in France on 13th July 1915 and was posted to ""C"" Company 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 8th September 1915. He was killed in action on 25th February 1917 and is buried at Cambrin Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Frequently visited Newark, when he stayed with his uncle and aunt, Mr & Mrs A.P. Norval of Cromwell Road. At Sheffield was employed as a railway clerk and enlisted there with his cousin, Harold Tye (killed in 1916).
