Family History

John William Martin was born in 1885 at Willoughby On the Wolds and was the son of William a waggoner on a farm and Elizabeth Martin of Flawford Cottages. Plumtree. his father William was born in 1855 at Caythopre, Notts and his mother Mary Elizabeth was born in 1859 at Edwalton, they were married in 1881 and went on to have the following children, John William b1885 Willoughby on the Wolds, George Frederick b1886 Upper Broughton, Elsie b1892 Upper Broughton and Herbet Baden b1901 at Upper Broughton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Flawford, Plumtree and are shown as William 56 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 52 yrs and their son Herbert Baden 10 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census John has left the family home and is boarding at 119 Station Road, Pilsley, Derbyshire, he is shown as being single 28 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is boarding with Alfred Taylor 36 yrs also a coal miner and his family. John married Eliza Dodson, they were married on 31st October 1916 at Primitive Methodist church, Keyworth and lived at New Street Station Road, Pisley Derbyshire.

Military History

Private John William Martin attested on 19th August 1914, he gave his age as 29 yrs and 229 days, he stated he was a coal miner. He had previously served with the South Notts Hussars serving for 4 years and was discharged on 9th September 1913 as time served. He joined at Chichester barracks on 29th August 1914 and was posted to the 2nd battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. He went to France on 29th November 1914 serving throughout the war and returned to England on 3th December 1918 for leave until his demobilisation from the Army on 9th February 1918 his demob address was Fern Cottage, Station Road, Pilsley, Derbyshire. He died on 4th March 1919 at his home address, the cause was influenza and pneumonia he was buried on 7th March at St Mary's Churchyard, Pilsley, Derbyshire
