Charles Edward Scorah was born in Worksop in 1895 and was the son of James a stone quarry labourer and Ellen Scorah of 27 Welbeck Street, Worksop. They had 11 children in total however sadly two died in infancy prior to 1911. Charles is living with his grandparents in the 1901 census at 35 Grafton Street and in 1911, at 27 Welbeck Street. The grandfather of Charles Edward, or Edward as he was referred to in the census, died in 1917 age 71, the year before Charles met his end. His brother James who had been born in 1886 and was a miner also enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters regiment on 3rd September 1914 at the outbreak of the 'Great War' however he was subsequently discharge under Kings regulation 392, on 24th November 1914.
Charles Edward Scorah enlisted at Worksop on the 9th Dec 1915 age 20. He was put on army reserve till mobilisation. He was initially service number 64872 of the North Staffordshire Regiment and later was transferred to the 9th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. It was his grandmother, Mrs Ellen Scorah of 27 Welbeck Street, who he elected as his next of kin and it was she who received his medals. He was killed whilst in action and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France
