William Sydney Baxter was born in 1881 the son of William a lithographer and Mary Ann Baxter (née Marwood). William was born in 1853 in Derbyshire and his mother Mary Ann Marwood was born in 1853 in Chard Somerset. Married in 1876, they had five children, two surviving infancy - William Sydney b.1881 Lillian b.1884 and Ann Elizabeth b.1889. William Sydney married Sarah Ashton on 3rd May 1902 at All Saints Church, Radford and they had a son John William born 19th October 1902. In 1911, his parents were living at 9 Rylands Street, Beeston, Nottingham. William Sydney and family lived in 1911 at 39 Dovecot Lane, Beeston.
William Sydney Baxter attested at Nottingham on 24th June 1916. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised on 7th December 1916. He was posted to the Royal Engineers and landed in France on 19th June 1917. He received a shrapnel wound to the nose on 24th August 1917. He was treated and discharged on 16th October 1917. He rejoined his battalion and was killed in action on 4th November 1917 and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium.
