Joseph Skelton and Ann (Annie) Elizabeth Bell married at Cuckney, Notts in 1882. They had nine children but only five had survived up to 1911. The surviving five were George born 1884, Charles 1886 , Edna Mary 1887, Hilda 1892 and Bertie born 1897. All were born and bought up in Cuckney. After 33 years of marriage, Annie died at the age of 55, just about the time that her youngest, Bertie, was attested for the Army. It then followed that Bertie’s father died in 1918 age 75.
Bertie was attested at Worksop on the 11th Dec 1915 at the age of 18 and was put in the army reserve. He was then mobilised on the 12th May 1916 and approved at Derby. Six days later he was allotted to the 2/5 North Staffs Regiment. He would have carried out his training before being sent to France on the 25th February 1917. He was killed in action the following year and as his body was never recovered or identified, he was commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
