Family History

William was born in Retford in 1896 and was the son of George a railway platelayer and Sarah Jane Booth, of 1, Tenterflat Cottage, West Retford, and he had six siblings. By the 1911 census the family are living at Tenterflat Cottage he is 14 years of age and an errand boy.

Military History

William enlisted in Retford and originally served with the service number 4112 in the Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys Regiment. He later transferred to the 2nd battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment he was killed in action on 9th October 1917 , his body was never recovered and identified and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.
