Harry Shipley was born in 1885 at Hucknall and was the son of William a shtland shawl maker and Martha Shipley née Davey of 12 Poplar Street Mansfield Woodhouse His father William was born in 1849 at Dublin and his mother Martha Davey was born in 1851 at Ruddington, they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, George b1884, Harry b185, Lilian b1891, Arthur b1894, Ada b1897 and Alice b1899 all were born in Heanor except Alice who was born in Nottingham In the 1911 census the family are livng at 148 Beardall Street, Hucknall and are shown as William 62 yrs a shetland shawl maker, he is living with his wife Martha 60 yrs and their children, George 27 yrs a shetland shawl maker, Lilian 20 yrs working at home, Arthur 17 yrs a coal miner, roadman, Ada 14 yrs a scholar and Alice 12 yrsd a scholar, their son Harry 26 yrs married a coal miner hewer is at the address and is listed as a visitor. Harry married his wife Esther Ann Allcock (born 26th May 1888 ) on 23rd July 1910 at St Marys Church, Hucknall they lived at 13 Glebe Street, Hucknall and later at 8 Tresham Street, Carcroft, near Doncaster. They went on to have the following children, Fred William born 29th December 1910, Herbert born 3rd March 1912 and Harry born 7th December 1916. Following his death his widow Esther Ann was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 31st December 1917.
Pioneer Harry Shipley enlisted on 20th October 1915 at Doncaster he gave his age as 30 yrs and 9 months, his address as 25 Park Avenue Cacroft near Doncaster, his next of kin was his wife Esther Ann of the same address. He served with the 101st Field Company Royal Engineers and landed in France on 27th July 1916 and he was killed in action on 7th June 1917, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres town Menin Gate.
