Family History

Thomas Edward was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Sutton née Handley. Thomas snr. was born in Ruddington in 1863 (J/F/M Basford), the son of Thomas and Sarah Sutton. He was baptised at Ruddington St Peter on 29 March 1863. Rebecca Handley was born in Arnold, Nottingham, in 1871 (A/M/J Basford), the daughter of Morton and Hannah Handley; she was baptised at Arnold St Mary on 6 June 1871. Her father was a professional cricketer at the time of the 1881 census, but by 1891 was a licensed victualler at the Red Lion, Easthorpe Street, Ruddington, where he lived with his wife and children, including Rebecca (19) of no occupation. Thomas and Rebecca were married on 6 August 1893 at St Paul's church, Hyson Green, Nottingham (J/A/S Nottingham). They had eight children who were all born in Ruddington: Sarah b. 13 May 1894 (A/M/J Basford) bap. Ruddington St Peter 1 July 1894, Thomas Edward birth registered 1897 (J/F/M Basford) bap. 3 January 1897 Ruddington St Peter, Eleanor b. 23 July 1898 (J/A/S Baford) bap. 14 August 1898 Ruddington St Peter, Harold Handley b. 10 August 1902 (J/A/S Basford), Eric William b. 26 December 1903 (1904 J/F/M Basford), Florence May birth registered 1906 (J/F/M Basford), Winifred Eliza b. 31 August 1907 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Edgar b. 15 January 1911 (J/F/M Basford. In 1901 Thomas (38) a butcher, and Rebecca (29) were living on Church Street, Ruddington, with their three children Sarah (6), Thomas (4) and Eleanor (2). They were still living on Church Street, Ruddington, in 1911. Thomas and Rebecca now had eight children: Sarah (16), Thomas (14), Eleanor (12), Harold (8), Eric (7), Florence (5), Winifred (3) and Edgar (2m). Thomas' father Thomas snr. died on 18 January 1926 and his mother Rebecca on 25 January 1935; they had continued to live on Church Street, Ruddington. Of Thomas Edward's siblings: Sarah was educated at Ruddington Church School and then Mundella Secondary School after which she attended Binn's Business College. She was employed as a clerk typist at Gerard Bros. Ltd, New Basford from 1912-1913 and then Wallis Binch, Beech Avenue Works, Nottingham, from 1914 to 1917. She applied successfully to the Queen Mary's Auxiliary Army Corps (No. 476) in 1917 and was employed as a clerk typist from 22 May. Sarah embarked at Southampton 24 May 1917 disembarking at Le Havre the following day. She worked in Rouen from 25 May 1917 and then in 1919, having been granted a compassionate discharge, at the Connaught Club, London, pending her discharge on 2 August 1919. (See letter from father in 'extra information'). Eleanor married John W Cross in 1923 (O/N/D Basford). In 1939 at the time the England & Wales Register was compiled, John (b. 22 August 1899) a fruiterer and confectioner, and Eleanor were living at 1 Church Street (Basford RDC) with their daughter Jean W. (b. 6 Apri 1928, later King). Harold Handley was a butcher in 1935. He died on 26 December 1966 when he was living at 5 Nuthall Gardens, Western Boulevard, Nottingham (probate record). Eric William probably died in 1975 (J/F/M Nottingham) Florence May has not yet been traced after the 1911 Census. Winifred Eliza probably married Robert S Hall in 1934 (J/F/M Basford). In 1939 Robert Shirley Hall (b. NOvember 1903) a garage proprietor, and Winifred, a shop keeper/grocer, were living on London Road, Shardlow, Derbyshire. She died on 14 June 1986 (A/M/J Derby); her home address was The Hollies, 8 Burton Road, Findern, Derby (probate record). Edgar probably married Beryl M. (b. 14 August 1910) and in 1939 they were living at Brookside Farm (Basford RDC); he was a builder's brand works manager.

Military History

Thomas Edward Sutton enlisted in Ilkeston, initially serving (149532) in the Royal Field Artillery later transferring to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He died from wounds received in action on 6 June 1917 and is buried in Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref: I J 8.) An act of gallantry in April 1917 won him the award of the Military Medal which his parents received in November 1917. He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

CWGC headstone, personal inscription: 'God be with you till we meet again' Nottingham Evening Post, 22 November 1917: ‘Military Medal for Ruddington Soldier. Mr and Mrs T Sutton of Church-street, Ruddington, have just received the Military Medal won by their eldest son, the late Lance-Corporal Edward Sutton, in April last for conspicuous bravery in bringing in wounded under very heavy fire. His commanding officer wrote of him: ‘We regret he is no longer with us. He was a good lad and thoroughly deserved his medal.' Lance-Corporal Sutton belonged to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light infantry, and had only been in France a few months when he was severely wounded and succumbed at the age of 20 years on June 6th. He was the first Ruddington lad to gain the Military Medal and his death was much deplored in the village where he was highly respected.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) Registers of Soldiers' Effects: His father Thomas was his legatee. WW1 Pension Ledgers: named his mother, Rebecca. Letter dated 24 April 1919 from Thomas Sutton to QMAAC, Rouen: 'Dear Madam, I have been in indifferent health for some time and find I cannot continue with my business (butcher) without help. My youngest daughter [Winifred] has just recovered from a serious illness and is not at all strong and I should very much like my eldest daughter to come home so that she could help me with my books and also give a helping hand in the home. Trusting you will put forward my daughter’s application for her discharge forward with all possible speed. I remain, yours faithfully etc' Sarah's application for a compassionate discharge was approved.
