In 1871 William Stokes of Worksop married Maria Bowman in her home place of Nottingham. They initially lived in Worksop where they had three children, Elizabeth born 1873, William Henry born 1875 and Thomas born 1878. By 1881 they were living in Rotherham at 86 Norfolk Street, where William senior was employed as a milk dealer. Whilst resident here, they had two more children, Lily in 1882 and Joseph in 1884. The completed family now moved back to Worksop where William worked as a bricklayers labourer resident at Netherton Road. As the family grew older they took on various jobs, William junior working like his father, in the bricklaying trade.
Pte. W.H. Stokes Worksop Guardian 1 September 1916 One more is added to the already long list of Worksop hero’s, who have fallen in the brave execution of their duty, in Pte. W. H. Stokes, of the Nott’s and Derby, and of 55, Netherton Road, who was killed in action on August 7th, at some place in France, as yet unknown. The dead soldier belongs to a well known Worksop family, being the son of the late Mr. John Stokes and Mrs Stokes. His father died about three months ago, leaving an aged widow of 78 years. Another pathetic circumstance is that Pte. Stokes was only married a month before he was drafted for France, and both the mother and Mrs. Stokes, junr have the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends in the Low Town District. Before enlistment, Pte. Stokes worked as a bricklayer for Messrs, Ilett and Son for many years, and was a trusted employee, enjoying the respect and esteem of the firm. Although well on to the limit of military age, he deemed it his duty to enlist, and made a very smart soldier, and his death will be regretted by many old friends in that end of town. Another brother, Pte. Joseph Stokes, in the Sherwood Foresters, is now serving in Ireland.
