William Spencer was born in Woodsetts in Yorkshire near the Nottinghamshire border. He was born in 1874, the eldest child of William and Elizabeth Spencer, nee Pearson. Within a period of 11 years they had a family of 5 children, 4 boys and 1 girl, all born at Woodsetts. In 1887 Elizabeth died aged 37. When William Junior was 21 years of age, he married Mary Annie Taylor of Woodsetts. The couple resided in Woodsetts where they had 2 daughters before moving to 77 Sandy Lane in Worksop where William worked as a coal miner. 2 Spencer sons were born here in Worksop, Edward and Harold, before moving on to 51 Ings Lane, Adwick Le Street, Yorkshire, where in 1909, Alice was born.
Pte. William Spencer. Worksop Guardian 28 July 1916 We also regret to record the death in action of Pte. William Spencer, of the 6th Leicester Regiment who was killed in France on July 14th. Spencer was 42 years of age. He was a native of Woodsetts, being the eldest son of Mr. Wm. Spencer, now of Woodsetts, who still works in the Quarry, despite his years. Deceased leaves a wife and six children, who now reside in Gildingwells. Pte. Spencer worked at Dinnington Pit as a miner for five years prior to joining the Army in December, 1914. The news reached Mrs. Spencer through her brother, Fred Taylor, who is in the same Company. Pte. Spencer has two other brothers serving, who comprise all the sons of Mr. Spencer of Woodsetts.
