Family History

Alfred Henry Longden was born in 1880 and was the son of John Alfred the managing Director of Stanton Ironworks and Jane Baxter Longden and the brother of Nina Longden. His father John Alfred was born in 1847 in Sheffield and his mother Jane Baxter was born in 1844 also in Sheffield, they had a further 5 children including Nina Eleanor b1879 Blackwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at Stanton by Dale and are shown as John Alfred 64 yrs a mining engineer he is living with his wife Jane Baxter 67 yrs and their children, Nina Eleanor 32 yrs no occupation listed and Alfred Henry 30 yrs a foundry manager, also living with them is Charles Frederick Longden 71 yrs a brother and 3 servants. He married Amy Matthews on 18th April 1912 at Swanwick, and they lived at Ash Mount Plumtree Nottinghamshire they had a son Arnold Henry born 3rd September 1913 at Stanton by Dale. His probate was proven on 20th May 1919 at Nottingham, it shows him as Alfred Henry Longden of Ash Mount, Plumtree, foundry manager and Captain H.M. Army died 2nd March 1919 at the Military Hospital, Rugeley, Staffordshire, his effects of £27,149 4 shillings and 9 pence were left to Amy Longden, widow, Geoffrey Appleby Longden mining engineer and Arnold Baxter Longden colliery agent.

Military History

Captain Alfred Henry Longden served in the 5th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he saw home service only and died in the Military Hospital at Ruckley and was buried in Plumtree (St Mary) churchyard.

Inscription on grave in Plumtree (St Mary) churchyard: 'In loving memory of Capt Alfred Henry Longden, 5th Batt Sherwood Foresters, who died on March 2nd 1919 at the Military Hospital, Ruckley, aged 38 years.'He is also commemorated in a stain glass window situated in St Michaels Church, Poole Hill, Bournemouth, Dorset. Alfred’s father, John Alfred Longden, was managing Director of Stanton Ironworks and President of the Institution of Mining Engineers. He moved to Bournemouth in his retirement in 1917.
