Family History

Leonard Hayes was born in 1896 the son of John a hosiery factory worker and Mary Hayes née Wilson and the brother of John James, Florence, Bertha and Ruth Hayes. John was born in 1863, Mary Wilson was born in 1861 bother were born in Sutton In Ashfield, married on 31st October 1883 at Mansfield register office they had 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 4 St Michael Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Private Leonard Hayes enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Sutton-In-Ashfield. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and died, 25th September 1915, aged 19, from a compound fracture of the skull, received in action. He is buried at Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium. Enclosure No.3 Row C. Grave 2.
