Wilfred Gration Hayes was born in 1894 he was the son of the late Francis Hallam a coal miner and Sarah Hayes née Gration of 63 Bagshaw Street, Pleasley Francis Hallam was born in 1864 at Pleasley Hill, he died in 1918 aged 54 yrs Sarah Gration was born in 1864 at Staveley, they were married on 20th August 1887 at Kilamarsh, Derbyshire, they went on to have 6 children. In 1911 the family were living at 63 Bagshaw Street, Pleasley Hill, Francis 47 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Sarah 47 yrs and 5 of their children, including Wilfred Gration 17 yrs a coal miner

Military History

Wilfred Gration Hayes enlisted on 30th December 1914 at Nottingham whilst residing at Mansfield he served with A battery 86th Brigade Royal Field Artillery he died of wounds on 15th March 1916 and is buried at St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourgh L'Avoue. France.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, 20/04/1916: Pte W Hayes killed in action on 15/03/1916 aged 22. Worked at Pleasley Colliery and lived at Bagshaw Street, Pleasley. Enlisted 30/12/1914. In the 23/03/1916 edition there was a letter re his death was printed.
