Alfred Charles Dent was born in 1892 at Winthorpe and was the son of Joseph Robert a landscape gardener and Katherine Dench née Jackson of 34 Lime Grove, Newark. His father Joseph Robert was born in 1860 at East Stoke and his mother Katherine Jackson was born in 1858 at Farndon Fields, Newark. They were married in 1886 at Uppingham and went on to have the following children, Hattie Winifred b1889, Joseph Richard b1891, Alfred Charles b1892 and Edward John 1895 all were born at Winthorpe. In the 1911 censes the family are living at 6 Middle Gate Newark and are shown as Joseph Robert 51 yrs a landscape gardener, he is living with his wife Katherine 53 yrs and their children Joseph Richard 20 yrs a maltsters clerk and Edward John 16 yrs a confectioner at the Co Operative Society.
Sergeant Alfred Charles Dent joined the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards at the age of 14 yrs and attained the rank of Sergeant in 1913, he served in The King's Company, 1st battalion Grenadier Guards and went out to France in February 1915. He was killed in action on 27th September 1915 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published on 9th October 1915 in the Newark Herald :- Second son of Joseph Robert & Catherine Dench, 6 Middlegate, Newark. Educated at the Mount school and briefly employed at Newark Post Office before joining the 3rd Grenadier Guards at age 14. He applied himself diligently and shortly after attaining the age of 18, he was promoted. Rising rapidly, he was made a sergeant a year before war broke out. Went out with a draft in Feb. 1915. Serving in the The Kings Company, 1st Battalion. At about six pm on the evening of 27th Sept. he had got into a German trench with his platoon and was telling his men to pass along when he fell forward and died in less than two minutes. Elder brother, QM Sgt J.R. Dench is with the 8th Sherwood Foresters in France
