Family History

George Derry (junior) was born in 1893 at Nottingham and was the son of George Derry (senior) a jobbing gardener and Sarah Derry née Gibson of 1 Barrack Lane, Lenton Sands Nottingham. His father George Derry (senior) was born in 1846 at Bingham, his mother Sarah Gibson was born in 1853 in Shepshed, they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough Registration area, they went on to have the following children, Elizabeth b1885, Ellen b1887, George b1893 and Annie b1895, all were born in Nottingham.

Military History

Private George Derry enlisted on 5th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 23 yrs 1 month and his address as 1 Barrack Lane, Lenton Sands, Nottingham, his next of kin was his father George of the same address, he gave his occupation as that of a warper. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 23rd February 1916 reporting to the Sherwood Foresters Depot at Derby. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and was promoted to unpaid lance corporal on 3rd June 1916. He arrived in France on 1st July 1916 and was admitted to the 17th Casualty Clearing Station on 20th October 1917 suffering a shell wound to his arm and back, he died the following day from his wounds. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
