Walter James Essex was born 1896 in Carlton. His mother Mary Elizabeth was a single lady and in 1901 she and her three sons were living with her Father, Thomas Essex, at Chesterfield Street, Carlton. Thomas worked as a platelayer for the railways. By 1911 Thomas, his daughter and the grandchildren were living at Garfield Cottage, Church Street, Carlton. Walter was then working as a general farm lad. Prior to his death his mother moved to 65, Deabill St., Netherfield, Notts.

Military History

Walter enlisted at Nottingham and arrived in France 29 July 1915. He is buried in Carlton Cemetery He was eligible for the 1915 Star, Victory and British medals.

Extra Information

The Commonwealth War Grave website incorrectly shows his name as Walten but this is actually Walter. The correct name is stated on the supporting grave registration documents.
