In 1901 James and Alice Pettinger (nee Fagan) were living in Main Street, West Stockwith, Notts. They had married in Retford where they had their first child, Elizabeth in 1893, before moving to West Stockwith where James worked as a canal boatman. They had four more children whilst living here, Amy in 1895 (she died 1907), James 1897, Walter in 1899, George 1903 and Hilda born in 1904. Sometime after 1907, the family moved back to Retford living at 1 Common Road, where in 1910, twins, Charles and Frank were born. In 1911, James carried on his canal boatman work, assisted by son James . In 1917, the younger James married Annie Lizzie Bannister at Retford.
James Pettinger enlisted at Retfored. He was attested on the 11 December 1915 aged 18 and approved on 11 May 1916 at Derby. His boating experience with his father no doubt led him to be accepted in the Royal Engineers Inland Waterways and Dock Companies number 208393. He later transferred to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action and is buried in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Belgium. Pte James Pettinger Retford Times 14th December 1917 We regret to record the death of Private James Pettinger, Sherwood Forsters, son of Mr J Pettinger, boat owner, Common Road, Retford. Before joining up the deceased was employed on one of Messrs Furley’s boats on the Chesterfield Canal. He was educated at Stockwith School and was 20 years of age. When he was called up he joined the Royal Engineers but was transferred a month ago into the Notts and Derbys. He was married in February last to Miss Bannister, of Spital Hill and leaves a young widow and one child. Much sympathy is felt with the parents and young widow in their sorrow.
