Frederick Wedge was born about 1887 and arrived in Worksop after 1911. In 1915 he was residing at number 8 Duke Place. He had an elder brother, Thomas, who also resided in Worksop at 36 Westgate and when Fred enlisted, became his registered next of kin having no parents and single.
Fred Wedge was attested at Worksop on the 10 Dec 1915 the put in the army reserve. He was mobilised on 29 Feb 1916. He went to France disembarking at Boulogne on 11 July 1916. On 22 July 1916 he joined the field and was transferred to the 1/5 Battalion and on the 16 Feb 1917 he was wounded (gas shell poisoning) whilst in action and died three days later. He was buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, France
Private P Wedge Retford Times 9 March 1917 News has been received of the death from gas poisoning of Pte P Wedge, Sherwood Foresters, who for five years lived with Mr and Mrs G Walton, 8 Duke Place Worksop. A telegram from Lichfield conveying the sad news was received on Wednesday week, and on Tuesday Mrs Walton got the following confirmatory letter from the BEF Casualty Clearing Station:- ‘I am very sorry to inform you that Pte P Wedge (N & D) died at this hospital on Tuesday evening (Shrove Tuesday). He was admitted on Saturday, gassed in a very critical condition and did not respond to treatment. M Miln (sister).’ Another Worksop lad also gassed mentioned Pte Wedge’s death in a letter home. Before enlisting last March, Pte Wedge worked at Steetley Quarry. He went to France in July and so had taken part in much of the Somme fighting. He was 28 years of age. The husband of Mrs Walton is in France and he and deceased were on very affectionate terms.
