The Vernon family had come to Worksop from Clowne after 1901. Arthur Vernon, a coal miner, had married Lucy Allison in 1884. They had nine children, eight born in Clowne, Arthur Henry 1886, Mary 1888, Annie E 1889, Samuel 1891, Lucy 1898, Esther 1894, Enoch 1895, Ruth 1900 and James born in Worksop in 1907. In Worksop the family found residence at number 6 Manvers Street, where Arthur senior and junior were coal mining and Enoch, as a 16 year old pit pony driver. The head of the family, Arthur, died in 1909 age 56.

Enoch Vernon Worksop Guardian 28 May 1915Official information has been received of the death in action at the Dardanelles of Pte Enoch Vernon, son of Mrs and the late Mr Arthur Vernon, of 6 Manvers Street, Worksop. He died gallantly fighting for his country, and sincere sympathy will be extended to his relatives. On the outbreak of war, Pte Vernon, who was at the time employed by Mr George Neal, John Street, Worksop, enlisted in the Royal Marines and proceeded to the Dardanelles on Feb. 6th.
