Wallace Rowland was born in 1894 at Eastwood and was the son of Frederick Scott a colliery blacksmith and Elizabeth Rowland née Burrows of 15 Engine Lane Newthorpe Nottinghamshire. His father Frederick Scott Rowland was born in 1865 at Eastwood, his mother Mary Elizabeth Burrows was born in 1865 at Greasley, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Kate Alice b1886 Greasley, Ethel b1891 Eastwood, Wallace b1894 Eastwood and Elsie b1895 Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Engine Lane, Newthorpe and are shon as Frederick Scott Rowland 46 yrs a colliery blacksmith, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 46 yrs and their children, Ethel 20 yrs no occupation listed, Wallace 17 yrs a colliery fitters apprentice and Elsie 16 yrs no occupation listed.
Rifleman Wallace Rowland enlisted on 8th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 20 yrs 280 days his address as 15 Engine Lane, Newthorpe, his occupation was that of a fitter, his next of kin was his father Frederick of the same address. Posted to the Rifle Brigade, he reported to the Rifle Brigade barracks at Winchester the following day. He landed in France on 21st July 1915 and was killed in action on 24th June 1916. He is buried at Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium.
