George William Jones was born in 1889 the son of William a coal miner hewer and Sarah Hannah Jones née Finney of 65 Mayfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, William was born in 1869 at Burton upon Trent, Sarah Hannah Finney was born in 1868 at Grassmoor, Derbyshire, married on 9th December 1888 at Claycross. George married Lily Saunders (born 19th July 1889) on 18th April 1908 at the Parish Church at Kirkby, they lived at 17 Sherwood Rise, Nuncargate, East Kirby and had the following children, William Henry born 24th August 1908, Doris Evelyn born 31st July 1909, Albert born 1st January 1911, Treace Mary born 8th September 1912 and George Douglas born 14th June 1917. In 1911 the family lived at 53 Mayfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, George William is 22 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Lily 21 yrs and three of their children. Commencing 11th November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week. His widow later lived at 1 George Street Worsboro' Bridge Barnsley.
Private George William Jones enlisted on 21st November 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 25 yrs and 285 days, he was a coal miner. He originally served with the service number 19613 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and went to France joining his battalion in the field on 28th September 1915. He was wounded a gun shot wound to his right hand and thigh on 10th September 1916. On the 2nd December 1916 he was transferred to the 8th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment and on 3rd May 1918 he died of Pyaemia (Sepsis) at Rouen. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension P.9.L.5A
