Sampson and Charlotte Jones were living in Mansfield at the start of their marriage. Sampson had a variation of jobs during his life time, including, wine merchants assistant, travelling tobacconist, publican and tiler. The couple had 7 chil-dren, Samson A 1883, Charlotte 1885, Harry 1886, Gertrude A 1890, Arthur 1895, Eveline 1899 and Annie 1910. The first son, Sampson Arthur Jones was born in Mansfield and although his parents were living Holywell Street, Chesterfield, his father publican at the Moulders Arms, He was resident in Worksop in 1901 as a visitor at 32 Westgate in the Snowden household. He was working as a plasterer at this stage and in 1902 he married Amy Robson in Worksop, having children, Fanny Charlotte 1903, Doris Amy 1906, Harry 1907 and in 1911 they were living at 10 Norfolk Street.
Pte Samson Arthur Jones Worksop Guardian 31 December 1915 News of the death of Pte Samson Arthur Jones of the 2nd Northants Regt. 22 Norfolk Street, Worksop, has been received. He was wounded by a bullet in his right side in France on December 20th, and the news was conveyed in a letter from a friend, Pte Pratt of the same regiment, who expressed hopes he would recover. He died, however, next day in one of the field hospitals and the melancholy news was communicated to the widow by one of the nursing sisters. Pte Jones, who was 32 years of age, previous to enlisting worked for Mr Geo. Peacock, plasterer. He was born in Mansfield, but he had resided in Worksop for about 18 years and was well known and greatly respected. His parents are still living in Chesterfield. He enlisted on February 1st and was drafted to France on 13th July and has practically been in the trenches ever since. He leaves a widow and three children who mourn his loss with the consolation that he has done “his bit” for the old country.
