William Henry Barnett was born in Worksop on 21 Feb 1880. He was the only child of William and Harriet Barnett. In 1891 they were living at no. 1 Gateford bar and 10 years later had moved to the Cottage, back of Bridge Place with William senior’s brother in law and two of his children living under the same roof. Now that young William was working, both he, and his father, were employed as maltster’s labourers. In 1901, William married Mary White at Worksop and was followed during the next 9 or 10 years had 3 surviving children, Maud, Beatrice and William Harry. William and Mary was working as a lodging house keeper on 51 Low Town Street, in Worksop with 31 lodgers registered on the 1911 census night.

S. William Barnet, of 51 Lowtown Street, who was in the Royal Naval Division, was missing, and this week his wife has received the intimation that his death is presumed to have occurred about that date, and that he was killed in action. The deceased, who was 39 years of age, enlisted in July last year, from Manton Colliery and hoped to join the Notts and Derbys but was put in the R.N.D. He took part in the fierce fighting in the Somme and it was here he met a soldiers death. He leaves four children with whom, and his widow, much sympathy is felt. He was last home in November 1917
