Born 1885 son of John and Eliza Dykes he had two sisters and a brother. Ernest was baptised April 1889 at St Anns church Nottingham. The baptism register stated he was born 3 October 1885. In 1901 the family were living at Chapel Street, Carlton. John was a Painter and Ernest was working as an errand boy for a warehouse. Ernest married Sarah Frances Pike on 1st February 1904 at the Nottingham Registry Office and they had two children, Arthur born 10th December 1904 and Francis May born 17th May 1910. The family were living at 1 Flatt Court, Gedling street, Sneinton and Ernest was a labourer at an Iron Foundry whilst his wife was a cotton winder. By 1919 they had moved to 2, Rose Yard, Bellargate, Nottingham. Sarah Frances was awarded a pension of 21 shillings a week following Ernests death.
Ernest attested 27 August 1914 at Nottingham aged 29 yrs and 339 days, his medical examination records him as having the tattoo of a sailor standing next to a cross on his right arm. He went to France on 4 January 1915 as part of the Expeditionary Force. Killed in action he was commemorated on Le Touret memorial, France. He was eligible for the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals. Twenty eight of his 113 days service were spent in detention and he was also sentenced to Field Punishment No.1 for being 'drunk in billets'.
