Family History

Susannah Moore was born in 1869 in Cuckney. She had a child, George Henry Moore, born in Langwith in 1885. In 1890 Susannah married Henry Russell, a coal miner, and they resided in Langwith. By 1901, the couple had moved to Cuckney and had three children, John W, Herbert and Charles Russell. In addition, George Henry Moore was now recorded as George H Russell. In 1905 Susannah produced a daughter, Ann Elizabeth Russell and in 1910, Henry had died at the age of 49. In 1911, George Henry had moved away from the family home in Cuckney but Susannah was looking after two of her nephews and her four ‘Russell’ children.

Military History

George enlisted at Welbeck and his mounted regiment was sent to Gallipoli in 1915 where they took on an infantry role. They served here for three months and this was where George was severely wounded of which he died. He was commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
