Alfred John Woodhouse Southgate

Alfred John Woodhouse was the second son and youngest child of Charles and Christina Southgate. Charles and Christina nee Brown were married in 1870 (A/M/J Nottingham) and had seven children all of whom were born in Nottingham: Mary Elizabeth b 12 August 1871 (J/A/S Nottingham), Christina b. 17 October 1872 (O/N/D Nottingham), Charles Woodhouse birth registered 1875 (J/F/M Nottingham), Clara Jane b. 1877 (A/M/J Nottingham), Eleanor b. 1880 (O/N/D Nottingam) died 6 February 1883, Adelaide Elizabeth birth registered 1884 (J/F/M Nottingham) and Alfred John Woodhouse b. 1886 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1871, shortly after their marriage, Charles (30), an 'out of employment' publican, and Christina (26), a dressmaker, were living at 48 Newcastle Street, Nottingham, in the household of Christina's spinster aunts, Martha Watson (46) head of household, and Eliza Watson (35), both of whom were lace menders. Charles (40) and Christina (36) were living at 19 Hutchinson Street, Nottingham, in 1881. They now had five children: Mary (9), Christina (8), Charles (6), Clara (3) and Eleanor (7 months). Eleanor died two years later in her third year. Charles and Christina had moved to Havelock Street, Nottingham, by 1891 and were living there wiith their six children: Mary (19) a lace worker, Christina (18) a dress milliner, Charles (16) a clerk, Clara (14) an errand girl, Adelaide (7) and Alfred (4). In 1901 the family was living at 53 Sneinton Road, Sneinton, Nottingham. Charles was now working as a general porter. Four of Charles and Christina's unmarried children were still living at home: Mary (29) of no occupation, Clara (23) a pattern girl, Adelaide (17) a school teacher, and Alfred (15). Also in the household on the night of the census was their married daughter, Christina [Weston] (28) and her four children, Ethel (7, b. Loughborough), Maud C. (5, b. Loughborough), Louis C (2, b. Sileby Leicestershire) and Dorothy E. (11m. b. Sileby). Alfred's father died on 8 October 1906 and in 1911 his widow, Christina (66), was living at 246 Gladstone Street, Nottingham, with her two unmarried daughters, Mary (39), of no occupation, and Clara (33) a lace overlocker, and Alfred (24) a dairyman 'on his own account'. Alfred married Catherine Mary/May Hinton (b. Bretby Derbyshire, 12 March 1893), the daughter of Mark Thomas Hinton, a farmer, and his wife Catherine, in 1915 (O/N/D Shardlow). Alfred and Catherine had two sons, Alfred J b. 1916 (Shardlow Derbyshire), who died the following year before his first birthday (1917 Shardlow Derbyshire), and Ralph Thomas b. 28 June 1921. Alfred's widow, Catherine, never remarried and in 1939, at the time of the England and Wales Register, was living at 114 Chilwell Road, Beeston, with her surviving son, Ralph Thomas, and her unmarried sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Southgate. Catherine died on 30 April 1992 at the Landermeeds Nursing Home, 265 High Road, Chilwell. Her son, Ralph, died in 1997 (Jun Basford) aged 76. Alfred's mother, Christina Southgate, continued to live at 246 Gladstone Road until at least 1914 (Nottingham city directory) but was living at The Green, Chilwell, when she died on 21 April 1931 at the age of 86. Of Alfred's five surviving siblings: Mary Elizabeth never married. In 1939 she was living at 114 Chilwell Road, Beeston, with her widowed sister-in-law Catherine May Southgate and Catherine's son, Ralph, a university student. She died on 19 June 1944; her home address was still 114 Chilwell Road. Christina married Lewis Weston in 1893 (J/F/M Loughborough). At the time of the 1901 Christina was at her parent's home in Sneinton, Nottingham, with her four children (see above) but by 1911 she and Lewis (43) were registered at London Road, Oadby, Leicestershire, where they were living with their five children, Ethel (17), Christina Maud (15), Louis Charles (12), Dorothy Eva (10) and Alfred John (3). Lewis Weston, a cattle slaughterman, died on 19 September 1916 at the age of 49; he was still living on London Road, Oadby. Christina married Charles Crooks (b. 31 January 1879) in 1921 (J/A/S Blaby Leicestershire) and in 1939 was still living in Oadby with her husband, Charles. Charles Woodhouse was employed as a traveller (brewers) in 1911 and at the time of the census was staying as a paying guest at 16 Summer Road, Acocks Green, Yardley, Solihull, Warwickshire. He has not yet been traced after 1911 but there is a record of the death of a Charles W Southgate (b. abt 1875) d. 1938 (Jun Pershore, Worcestershire) aged 63. Clara Jane has not yet been traced after 1911. Adelaide Elizabeth married John Witham Casson (b. 11 March 1883) in 1909 (O/N/D Basford). In 1911 they were living at 100 de la Pole Avenue, Hull, Yorkshire where John was an elementary shool master for the local Education Committee. He and Adelaide had one child, John Witham (1m). At the time of the 1939 England & Wales Register John Casson, now a head teacher, was registered living in Kingston upon Hull, Adelaide has not yet been traced on the register, but was awarded probate when her husband died on 24 September 1940. His address was given on the probate record as 'Grey Dawn', Nightingale Road, Bridlington, Yorkshire. Adelaide died in 1961 (Sep Clitheroe, Lancs) aged 77.
