Samuel Cox (junior) was born in 1896 at Fiskerton and was the son of Samuel Cox (senior) a lighterman on the river and Emma Jane Cox née Edlin , of Fiskerton, Nottingham. His father Samuel Cox (senior) was born in 1862 at Mourhanger, Bedfordshire and his mother Emma Jane Edlin was born in 1867 at Swinderby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District and they went on to have 8 children, one of which died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Fiskerton were , George b1886, Harry b1887, Nellie b1891, Annie b1893, Mary b1895, Emma Jane b1895 and Samuel b896. In the 1911 census his parents are living at Fiskerton village and are shown as Samuel Cox 49 yrs a lighterman on the river employed by Trent Navigation Company, he is living with his wife Emma Jane 44 yrs of age. Samuel Cox (junior) has left home by 1911 and in the census he is living at Fiskerton with Theodore Alton Walker 34 yrs a land agent and his family , he is one of 3 servants employed by the family, he is shown as beig15 yrs and a domestic page boy.
Private Samuel Cox enlisted at Chesterfield whilst residing at Clown, he initially served with the service number 80849 in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was serving with the 26th battalion Royal Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 23rd September 1917. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
