Family History

Herbert was born in 1895 in Worksop the son of William Herbert and Phoebe Saunders (nee kitchen) of 1, Moorgate, Retford Notts.He had a younger sister Dorothea. His father was born in Retford in 1862 and according to the 1901 census of the town was a general & marine storekeeper. In the 1911 census Herbert is 16 years of age single and an auctioneers clerk, he is living with his family who are still at 1 Moorgate,Retford.

Military History

Herbert first attested on 19th October 1914 into the territorial forces and served with the Notts Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry , at the time he stated he was 19 years and 9 months of age and that he was a clerk living in Retford. However on 6th January 1915 after only 80 days he was discharged from the army under Kings Regulations paragraph 392 III as 'not likely to become an effiecient soldier. ' He later re enlisted in York and served with the Northumberland Fusiliers. He later transferred to the machine Gun Corps where he was killed on 20 Sept 1917 probably during the battle of Polygon Wood and was just 22 years of age when he was killed in action. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery
