Percy Connell was the son of Charles and Margaret Connell. He was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1885. His father, Charles was a boot and shoe maker and moved around the country, no doubt to ply his trade. His four children, Jane, Herbert, Percy and Charles, were born in a variety of locations including Barnsley. Bramley, Leeds and Sheffield. When the children reached adulthood, Jane married Wilfred Ford in 1897 and settled in Ecclesall, Herbert married Ethel Greednwood in 1901 and settled in Clay Cross Derbys, and Percy married Florrie Smith in 1904 in Sheffield.. Their parents and Charles William moved to Worksop residing at 6 Back Crown Street. By 1911 Percy, had settled in Pilsley, Chesterfield at 5 Slacks Lane, and had born 2 children, both born in Pilsley, George 1905 and Cissie in 1907
Pte. Percy Connell Worksop Guardian 22 June 1917 Another Worksop soldier to lose his life for his country is Pte. Percy Connell, of the Northamptonshire Regiment, husband of Mrs. Connell, 43, Trent Street, and son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Connell, John Street, Worksop. The sad news is contained in a letter written to Mrs. Connell by Sec. Lieut. Beaufort Suchlick, who says:-“On behalf of the officers, non commissioned officers and men of this Company, I beg to tender my deepest sympathies in your bereavement? He was killed on the night of 8th-9th June, whilst at his post helping to keep his gun in action at a critical moment. We all realize too well what a terrible blow this news must be for you, but it will, I am sure, be a great consolation for you to know that Pte. Connell was a fine soldier, much beloved by all his comrades in arms. His loss is deeply felt by all. This is high praise and is well deserved, Pte. Connell was a gallant soldier, just as in private life he was a steady, quiet, industrious man. He was one of three brother’s, and the three voluntary enlisted when the call came in November, 1914. His brothers are Pte. Herbert Connell. York’s Regt and Pte. Charles W. Connell, R.A.M.C. Pte. Connell was a miner at Shireoaks, and was 34 years of age. He leaves a widow and three children, to whom, with his parents, the sincere sympathy of the townspeople is extended.
Commemorated at Rookery British Cemetery, Heninel, France. Percy's younger brother, Charles William Connell also died in the Great War in 1918 in Italy. Research by Colin Dannatt
