Family History

John Thorpe Hayward was born in 1881 he was the son of the late John Needham a farmer and Rachel Hayward née Carr and the brother of Ann, Willie Carr, Tom and Mary Hayward of Plumtree Nottinghamshire. John Needham was born in 1843 at Wormhill, he died in 1918 aged 75 yrs, Rachel Carr was born in 1846 at Peak Forest, Derbyshire they were married in 1868 at Chapel Le Frith and went on to have 11 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Flawford, Plumtree, John Thorpe Hayward is 30 yrs and he is a farm assistant.

Military History

Private John Thorpe Hayward enlisted at West Bridgford, he served wit the 4th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he died of wounds on 21st September 1916 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery Grave Reference: XVI A 8A
