Family History

Ernest Bills was born in 1888 the son of Arthur Bills a coal miner hewer and the late Sarah Bills née Hill of 5 Railway side, Preistic Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Arthur was born in 1853, Sarah Hill was born in 1859 both were born in Barleston, Leicestershire, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Market Bosworth registration district, they had 6 children. Ernest married Catherine Collins (born 18th May 1889) in 1909 at Mansfield, they lived at 5 Hardwick Street Sutton-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire they had children John Leslie born 4th February 1909 and Arthur Henry born 4th August 1913 Commencing 14th January 1918 his widow Catherine was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military History

Private Ernest Bills enlisted at Mansfield he served with 'B' Company 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 29th August 1915 and was killed in action, 27th June 1917, by German shellfire whilst serving in the trenches near Outerdom, Belgium. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
