George Charlesworth

Pte. George Charlesworth Worksop Guardian 23 August 1918 The long list of Worksop men who have fallen in the war must be added the name of Pte. George Charlesworth, of the 23rd Reinforcements, New Zealand Regiment, who died in hospital at Salisbury from cerebrospinal fever, on the 12th inst. Pte. Charlesworth was a Worksop man by birth and a member of a well known Worksop family. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. Charles Charlesworth and Mrs. Hayes, 235, Gateford Road, Worksop, and immigrated to New Zealand in 1909. When in England he worked in the building trade at Worksop, and latterly at Sheffield. He en-listed in 1916, and came over to the old country in uniform. He visited Worksop in the summer of last year before going to France, and in January this year he was invalided to England through illness. He was in Worksop about seven weeks ago, and on returning to camp he encountered the illness from which he died. He was buried on August 14th at Stratford Cemetery, near Salisbury, with Military Honours. Amongst the mourners were Mrs. Hayes (mother), Mrs. Birch, Mrs. Wrack and Miss Dora Charlesworth (sisters), and three nurses from the hospital. Diseased who was 36 years of age, was unmarried. Two brothers are serving, Fred in the Royal Marine Artillery, and Charles in the Navy.
