John Carnell and Betsy Foster married at Retford in 1887. In 1891 they were living at their long time address of 56 Cheapside, Worksop, where John became a brewer’s labourer. They first had a daughter, Lilly, followed by James Arthur, then John Frederick born in 1897. John and Betsy had 3 more children by 1911, Fred, Fanny and Kate. As a 13 year old, John was working as an errand boy
John Frederick Carnell enlisted at Retford where he joined the Sherwood Foresters, regimental number 4177. He was later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), drafted to France where he was killed in action and is commemorated on the Pozieres memoral, France
John’s elder brother, James Arthur Carnell, was also killed whilst serving in France on 7th July 1916. Research by Colin Dannatt
