Born 1897. Son of William and Sarah Jane Nelson, his father worked on the railway. Both his parents had been born in Lincolnshire and had moved to Nottinghamshire with his Father's work. In 1901 the family were living at 47 Bourne Street in Netherfield. Esma had one older brother Leslie. By 1911 his father had died and his mother was a Boarding House keeper at 127 Victoria Road, Netherfield, he is shown as a labourer with a furniture company. Sarah Jane Nelson remarried in 1916 to James Everington. Esma as he signed himself was a small man only 5 foot 4 and a half inches tall. At the time of his death his mother was living at 24, Godfrey St., Netherfield, Notts.
Attested 23 April 1913 at Carlton at the age of 17. Part of his training was done in Nottinghamshire at Thoresby Park. Esma was transferred from 1/8th battalion to the 3/5th battalion on 15 Nov 1915 but was soon back with the 1/8th battalion on 4 March 1916. He was sent to France on 25 June 1915 sailing from Southampton as part of the British Expeditionary Force returning to England on 27 August of the same year on the hospital ship Newhaven. He then returned to France on 4 March 1916 arriving at the 46 (M) Division Base Depot on the 5th and on the 16th March he joined the unit in the field and was killed in action a month later. He is buried in the Ecoivres Military Cemetery Mont-St Eloi France. His personal effects which included a mouth organ, an identity disc and some cigarette cards were sent back to his family. Eligible for British, Victory & 1915 Star medals. His three medals were received by Mrs Sarah J Everington of 24 Godfrey Street, Netherfield in 1921.
