Francis Nelson was born in 1890 at Burton Joyce and was the son of John a market gardener and Elizabeth Nelson née Foster of 1 Beck Street, Carlton, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1855 at Burton Joyce and his mother Elizabeth Foster was born in 1859 at Gunthorpe, she died on 13th July 1911 she was 52 yrs of age, they were married on 21st November 1882 at St Marys Church, Lowdham, they went on to have the following children, Elizabeth b1885 Gunthorpe, Francis b1890 Burton Joyce and Ethel b1899 at Burton Joyce. In the 1911 census they lived at 1 Beck Street Carlton Nottingham and were shown as John 55 yrs a market gardener, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 52 yrs and their children, Elizabeth 26 yrs a hosiery chevener, Francis 20 yrs a market gardener and Ethel 12 yrs a scholar. Francis married Olive Clara Reed (born 14th January 1891 Chesterfield) in 1915, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived on Main Street Gedling and later Victoria Street Gedling, they went on to have a daughter Dorothy Nelson born 3rd June 1916. Following his death his widow Olive was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and eight pence a week commencing 14th October 1918.
Corporal Francis Nelson enlisted at Lowdham whilst residing at Gedling he initially served with the service number 45261 in the Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire Regiment) He was serving with the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, when he was killed in action on 21st March 1918. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 21st March 1919 :- “NELSON. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Cpl. Frank Nelson, killed in action March 21st, 1918. I miss him and mourn him in silence unseen, and think of the happiness that might have been. – From sorrowing wife, Olive, and Dorothy.” “NELSON. – In affectionate remembrance of Cpl.
